The graveyards of All Saints Church, Stoke Ferry, 2020 survey: Part One

In April 2020, Jim McNeill conducted a survey of the two graveyards belong to All Saints Church in Stoke Ferry. He did so with kind permission from Kit Hesketh-Harvey (30 April 1957 – 1 February 2023).

Here are the findings from the survey of the graveyard which is in the Church grounds. So, the next time the church and grounds are open, do take time to explore and visit the epitaphs.

As may be seen from the image below, the majority of the memorials and markers in the churchyard have been lost. Many of them have also been moved over time.

Memorials 16-25 appear to be footstones (as against headstones) which have been lined up against the wall.

1.  In Loving Memory of Edward Wright Etheridge. Born January 15 1799. Died April 8 1883. And Gertrude his wife. Born February 26th 1800. Died August 21st 1882. [Damaged; the top stonework is from a separate, lost, memorial]

2 & 3.

In Memory of Eliz. Powell who died June 20th 1807. Aged 79 Years. In Memory of  John Powell who died December 16th 1809. Aged 69 Years.

4. IHS. Sacred to the Memory of Roger Micklefield. Who departed this life on the 16th July 1849. Aged 76 Years.

5. Sacred to the Memory of + Will Pollard who died Septer 25 1862. Aged 59 Years. In the midst of life we are in death. ALSO Rebekah his Wife who died Janry 19 1864 Aged 69 Years. Elizabeth Daughter of the above. Born Novr 27 1827. Died Septer 27 1842.

6. Henry William Dewer. Departed this life February 8 AD 1850. Aged 81 Years.

7. Sacred to the Memory of John Englebright. Who departed this life 9th Septer 1864. In his 72nd Year. Also of Sarah. Wife of the above who died Janry 17th 1893. In her 92nd Year. Gone but not forgotten.

8. Herewith the Remains(?) Of William  Son of John Rhodn[?] M-ners. Who died December – 1818? Aged 15? Also of Alar—– his sister Who died in 1818? A and[?] L?—–

9. In Loving memory of Agnes a beloved wife of Anthony Horrex Micklefield. Aged 38. And of Anthony Horrex Micklefield.

10. Decorative Fleur de Lys with the interspaced words “Thy Will /Be Done/ Thy King/dom come” [1] Sacred to the Memory of Emmanuel? Hubbard. Who died June 2 AD 1869. In Dec? 24 of this? AD -h late Superintendent of Police ~ Stoke Ferry. [2] Sophia Ann wife of lamia? Husband who died December 12 AD 1860. Aged -7 or?of? years —— of Sh——C/Goner within County I—– b———- in? G—- -died August AD 18(3? or 8?)1 -a-dstrar-.

11. [1] + Sacred to the memory of John Drosier Etheridge. Who Died November 21 AD 1854. Aged 52 Years. In God Is My Salvation. [2] Also of Sarah his wife Who Died July 14 1875 Aged 77 Years. The Earth is Full of the Goodness of the Lord.

12. Sacred to the memory of Roger Micklefield ( Gentleman ). Who departed this life the 1st August 1809 aged 86 Years. Also Mary his Wife. Who departed this life. The 25th January 1823. Aged 70 Years.

13. In Loving Memory of Robert John Rabett 1920-2011. Jane Rabett 1932-2019

14. Sacred to the Memory of Henry Steele. Many years SURGEON of this place. Who died 25th October 1844(?). Aged 63 Years. Also Mary relict of the above. Henry Steele.Who died 6th Feb. 1861. Aged 67 Years. Also in the memory of five infant children of the above who are buried near this place. This stone also records the death of Edward, second son of the above Henry Steele who died in Calcutta on the 27th Jan. 1845. After a few days’ illness. Aged 32 Years.

15. Unmarked: With carved cross along the top of the tombstone.

16.  Footstone: EM 1802.

17. Footstone: JF  1783 ~ possibly  commemoration John Fearchild who died this year.

18. Footstone: W-H  1860    E-H 1818.

19. Footstone, undated:  H + L   R+L.

20. Footstone: Thos. Son of W & C Ship. Died Aug 21 1819. Aged 6 Months(?).

21. Footstone [?], Fleur de Lys, undated: In Memory of Agnus Daughter of Will & Mary.

22. Footstone: FF  1792.

23. Footstone: FW  1850.

24. Footstone/Possible small headstone: TL  1820, EL  1827.

25. Footstone: IB(?) 1787.

26. AD 1852. Sacred to the Memory of James Bradfield who died in Dublin 24th October 1807 Aged 72, and was buried at Mountrath Queens County Ireland. And Sarah Bradfield, his wife who died 28th August 1793 Aged 55 and was buried in the vault beneath where also rest the remains of Charles Sanders who died 26th Feb 1826 Aged 59. And Sarah Sanders his wife who died 14th December 1851 Aged 83. [The latter was the eldest daughter of the above named James and Sarah Bradfield]. And also of James Bradfield Sander Bradfield J.P. and D.L. Eldest son of Charles and Sarah Sanders Who died May 15 1875 Aged 79.

27: In Memory of Phebe Wife of William Roan Jnr who died May 2 1846 Aged 32 Years.
