Commutation of Tithes

“This was the process by which payment of Tithes in kind to the clergy of the local Church of England church (e.g., All Saints Church, Stoke Ferry) was substituted for a cash payment which was paid by landowners annually or as a one-off payment. Following local enclosures, this monetary transfer to local clergy was an important factor leading to their further alienation from their local population at large.”
